AI & Innovation in Construction: October 13, 2026

Hi everyone!

Your AI and innovation in construction update for October 13, 2026.

The short version: A Canadian company is developing a hardhat that warns workers about nearby hazards, and ChatGPT has two new tricks worth knowing about. It can build interactive tools and turn voice recordings into useful notes and follow-ups!

1. A hardhat that can see what's happening around you

An Edmonton company called SenseHuman AI has developed a hardhat with four small cameras that watch for hazards around a worker.

If it detects something dangerous, like approaching equipment, a ledge or a tripping hazard, the hardhat vibrates to warn the person wearing it. It can even indicate which direction the danger is coming from.

The technology is still in its early stages, but the company has completed several field trials and has a small number of hardhats already in use.

Why contractors should care: It's an interesting example of AI moving out of the office and onto the jobsite. Imagine an extra set of eyes helping workers stay aware of their surroundings. It won't replace proper safety practices, but it's a technology worth watching.

2. Two new ChatGPT features worth trying

First, ChatGPT can now build little tools for you.

You can ask it to create interactive calculators, charts and simple tools right in your conversation. And it's easy!

For example, try copying this into ChatGPT:

"Create a simple interactive crew-planning calculator for a construction job. Start with 120 hours of work, three workers and eight-hour workdays. Let me change the number of workers and hours per day, and show how many working days the job might take. Include the assumptions and show the math."

Try changing the crew from three people to five and see what happens. It's an interactive tool that's simple to use.

Second, ChatGPT can now read your voice recordings!

Have a recording from a meeting, site visit or a quick voice memo you made for yourself?

With a paid ChatGPT plan, you can upload the audio recording and ask it to turn what you said into useful notes.

For example:

"Listen to this recording and give me a summary, anything that needs follow-up, and a list of action items. Flag anything that's unclear."

No more trying to remember everything you talked about!

Why contractors should care: These are simple ways to save time on routine tasks without learning complicated software.

Remember, always check AI calculations and notes for accuracy. Get permission before recording others, and don't upload confidential bid pricing, payroll, financial information or sensitive project documents unless you're using an approved account.
