AI & Innovation in Construction: November 2, 2026

Hi everyone!

Your AI and innovation in construction update for November 2, 2026.

The short version: Autonomous excavators are now doing paid work on real construction sites, and AI can help take some of the legwork out of sourcing materials and comparing suppliers.

1. Autonomous excavators are now doing paid construction work

Bedrock Robotics raised another US$600 million last week to expand technology that turns existing excavators into autonomous machines.

The interesting part is that these machines are already doing paid work on active commercial construction sites, without an operator in the cab.

Bedrock's technology can be added to equipment contractors already own rather than requiring an entirely new robotic machine.

Why contractors should care: This is a good example of how automation may actually show up on jobsites. It may be less about buying futuristic robots and more about familiar machines gradually becoming capable of doing some work autonomously.

Need to find a material quickly or compare a few suppliers?

In ChatGPT, choose Web search. You can also do this in Microsoft Copilot.

Try:

I need 40 sheets of 5/8-inch Type X drywall for a job in Victoria. Find local suppliers and current prices you can verify online. Compare the same sheet size where possible. Tell me who offers delivery, flag suppliers where I need to call for contractor pricing or stock, and give me the best three options with links. Do not guess at prices or availability.

The useful part is having AI do the first round of searching across multiple suppliers and organize what it finds for you.

It can help identify who carries the product, published prices, delivery options, sheet-size differences and which suppliers need a phone call for stock or contractor pricing.

Why contractors should care: Instead of opening a bunch of supplier websites and trying to keep track of everything yourself, you can get a quick starting point and then call the best-looking suppliers.

Privacy reminder: Don't upload confidential bid pricing, payroll, personal information, client-confidential information or sensitive project documents unless your company allows it and you understand the account you're using.
